Steel Joint Institute Announces 2012 Design Award Winners
12/21/2012 - The Steel Joist Institute is pleased to announce the winners of its 2012 Design Awards. The awards are presented in three categories – industrial, non-industrial and unique. The three winning companies received a $2,000 scholarship in their name to a school of their choice for an engineering student.

Industrial: CMC Cary Engineering for its work on the 1.2 million square-foot Boeing Dreamliner Assembly Plant located in North Charleston, S.C. The project called for approximately 18,000 tons of structural steel and joist, and included a 636,540-square-foot roof deck. CMC Joist and Deck served as the steel joist manufacturer for the project.

Non-industrial: KCBA Architects for its design work for the Phase I construction of the St. Anna Greek Orthodox Church in Flemington, N.J. The more than 15,000-square-foot complex includes a new church, administrative office, education spaces and community center. Canam Steel Corp. was the steel joist manufacturer.

Unique: Albert Kahn Associates, Inc. for the design and construction of the 221,000-square-foot East English Village Preparatory Academy located in Detroit, Mich. The new facility includes eight science laboratories, a high-tech media center, performing arts wing, and an athletic complex with a community health clinic and multi-seasonal stadium. New Millennium Building Systems served as the steel joist manufacturer.
Judging of each project was based on flexibility, speed of construction, value and aesthetic considerations. Eligible projects included new buildings and major retrofit or expansion projects, which were constructed within the last three years and located in the United States, Canada or Mexico. The steel joists and/or joist girders must have been manufactured by an active member of the Steel Joist Institute.
Honorable mentions also were recognized in each category. Forum Inc. was named honorable mention in the industrial category for the design of an 800,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Midland, Mich.; New Millennium Building Systems served as the steel joist manufacturer. Brent Maupin Engineering & Design was recognized with an honorable mention in the non-industrial category for its work on the San Francisco de Asis Church; Quincy Joists was the steel joist manufacturer. Richard Fleischman + Partners Architects, Inc. was named honorable mention in the unique application category for the expansion and renovation of the Western Reserve Historical Society in Cleveland, Ohio; New Millennium Building Systems served as the steel joist manufacturer. Besides setting standards for the steel joist industry, the Steel Joist Institute works closely with major building code bodies throughout the country helping to develop code regulations regarding steel joists and Joist Girders. The Institute also invests thousands of dollars in research related to steel joists and Joist Girders and offers a complete library of publications and other training and research aids. The Steel Joist Institute is a not-for-profit organization.
