Steel Institute Elects New Board Member
02/17/2014 - The Board of Directors of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) has elected Gary Halverson, president and CEO of Cliffs Natural Resources Inc., as the newest member of its 23-person Board.
Halverson was recently approved unanimously by the AISI Board at its winter meeting in Washington, D.C. Halverson’s election fills the vacancy left by the retirement of Joe Carrabba, former chairman of the AISI Board and former president and CEO of Cliffs.
“Gary’s long-time leadership in the metals and mining industry brings an important perspective to our Board and helps preserve our continued partnership with the mining sector on our critical shared issues. We look forward to Gary’s outstanding participation,” said Thomas J. Gibson, president and CEO of AISI.
Halverson joined Cliffs in November 2013 as president and COO. He has over 30 years of experience in mining that spans across the gold, copper, and nickel industries. Most recently, he was interim chief operating officer at Barrick Gold Corporation Inc. and had been regional president-North America since 2011. With Barrick since 2005, he began within the company’s operations where he held various management positions. He was promoted to president — Australia Pacific in 2008 where he led a region of 6,500 employees across nine mine sites till 2011. Prior to Barrick, he was with the Placer Dome Mine in Timmins, Ontario, the Cortez Mine in Nevada, Kinross Gold Corporation and the New Britannia mine in Manitoba.
At AISI’s previous Board meeting in November, they also elected Saikat Dey, CEO of Severstal North America; Jim Baske, president and CEO of ArcelorMittal Dofasco; and, Victor Cairo, CEO of ArcelorMittal Mexico as incoming members of the Board of Directors.
