Steel Groups to Senate: Pass Leveling the Playing Field Act
09/11/2024 - The Steel Manufacturers Association, the American Iron and Steel Institute, the United Steelworkers union and other manufacturing groups are urging the U.S. Senate to pass a bill that would give the government additional tools to stop unfair trade practices by China.
In a letter to Senate leaders, the organizations said the Leveling the Playing Field 2.0 Act would speed up dumping investigations and render judgments sooner to prevent further evasion. It would also give the Commerce Department authority to investigate Chinese manufacturing operations that have been moved to another country to avoid penalty as well as cross-border subsidies, they said.
“While companies that manufacture in America spend millions to win [a trade] case and wait more than a year for duties to be applied to correct a market disruption, Chinese companies can quickly move their production to other countries to evade our remedies and continue targeting the U.S. market,” the groups wrote in the letter.
