Steel Groups Offer NAFTA Recommendations
06/06/2017 - Six North American steel industry groups have issued a joint policy statement outling their wishes for a revised North American Free Trade Agreement.
The groups said they believe the tenets of an updated agreement should include the establishment of enforceable disciplines on currency manipulation and on the conduct of state-owned enterprises; improving customs procedures and upgrading border infrastructure; and strengthening the rules of origin, among other things.
“While we view NAFTA as a successful agreement, after 23 years it can be modernized and strengthened,” the groups said in a joint statement. “Ultimately, the goal should be to grow consumption of steel in North America while increasing intra-NAFTA trade and market share for NAFTA producers,” they said.
The policy statement was written by the American Iron and Steel Institute, the Steel Manufacturers Association, the Committee on Pipe and Tube Imports, the Specialty Steel Industry of North America, Canacero, and the Canadian Steel Producers Association.
