Steel Dynamics Takes the Keys to Closed Bar Mill, Eyes November Restart
09/18/2018 - Steel Dynamics Inc. has finalized its acquisition of shuttered Kentucky Electric Steel for US$5 million and plans to reopen the facility in November.
In an announcement Tuesday, Steel Dynamics said the acquisition, which it had disclosed in July, will give it an additional 250,000 tons of bar rolling capacity.
Located outside of Ashland, Ky., USA, the mill made special bar quality and merchant bar quality flats. It was closed by its former owner, Specialty Steel Works Inc., earlier this year. It will now operate under the auspices of Steel Dynamics’ Steel of West Virginia unit.
"Kentucky Electric Steel has been a loyal customer of our Steel of West Virginia and Roanoke bar divisions," said Glenn Pushis, senior vice president of the Steel Dynamics’ long products group.
"We believe that the complementary product offerings will provide value to our customers. We currently anticipate that roughly 100,000 to 150,000 tons of billets will be shipped each year from our long products steel mills to be further processed at Ashland, providing additional value-added capability and higher through-cycle utilization for our steel mills," he said.
