Steel Dynamics Sites Planned Mill in Texas
07/22/2019 - Steel Dynamics Inc. will build its US$1.9 billion flat-roll mill in Sinton, Texas, about 30 miles northwest of the port of Corpus Christi, the company announced Monday.
"We are extremely excited to announce our selection of Sinton as the site for our next-generation, new flat-roll steel mill investment," said Steel Dynamics president and chief executive Mark. D. Millett.
"We are eager to join the Sinton community, and we appreciate the warm welcome and support that we have received from them, Gov. Greg Abbott and the state of Texas, as well as local leaders from San Patricio County, the city of Sinton, and the Sinton Independent School Board.”
Steel Dynamics said the site offers several advantages, including proximity to customers in and around Texas, the western U.S. and Mexico; proximity to sources of prime ferrous scrap; and enough space to allow customers to set up shop on-site.
"Our customers are eager for us to begin, as we have been discussing plans for several of them to co-locate on-site with us," Millett said. "We believe a majority of the customer base will experience a significant freight savings compared to their current supply-chain configurations. We are also making meaningful headway regarding regional prime ferrous scrap sourcing.”
The mill, which will pair an electric arc furnace with thin-slab casting, is to have the capacity to produce 3 million tons of sheet, including the latest generation of advanced high-strength steels. It will be able to cast slabs in widths of up to 84 inches and thicknesses of up to 5.5 inches. Additionally, it will be able to roll coils weighing up to 52.5 tons.
“Our team has selected a suite of technologies based on our proven history of success that should allow us to achieve steel grades previously out of reach to thin-slab casting technology, while sustaining the low-energy and low-carbon footprint that is at the core of our steelmaking operations,” Millett said.
