Steel Dynamics Executive Named Chief Operating Officer

In the newly created role, Schneider, who currently serves as senior vice president of SDI’s flat-rolled division, will maintain his current responsibilities, but also will assume responsibility for SDI’s long products, steel fabrication and metals recycling businesses.

“This appointment is in recognition of our ongoing meaningful growth strategy and the need for continued growth and talent development within our leadership teams,” said SDI chairman and chief executive Mark D. Millett.

“The entire senior leadership team and all of our 12,000 team members have placed Steel Dynamics in a position of strength and competitive differentiation. Barry’s new assignment recognizes the broad leadership role he has played. He and I have worked together since the founding of the company, and he has been an important part of the incredible team that has driven our success.”

The promotion is effective 1 March, and SDI senior vice presidents Chris Graham, who leads the long products group; Miguel Alvarez, who leads metals recycling and is president of OmniSource; and Jim Anderson, who leads steel fabrication and is president of New Millennium Building Systems, will report to Schneider.

Executive vice president and chief financial officer Theresa E. Wagler and Glenn Pushis, senior vice president for strategic projects and president of Aluminum Dynamics, will continue to report to Millett.

Schneider has been with Steel Dynamics for 28 years and was part of the team that built the company’s first steel mill in Butler, Ind., USA. He has held served in various operational and leadership roles within SDI and was promoted to senior vice president in 2016.

Schneider earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and an M.S. degree in engineering management from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. He also received an executive certificate in technology, operations and value chain management from the MIT Sloan School of Management.

He also is AIST's first vice president, but is set to take over as president later this year. His term will begin in May, following the conclusion of AISTech, which is being held 7-11 May in Detroit, Mich.
