Steel Capacity Continues to Outpace Need, OECD Says
04/01/2019 - Global steelmaking capacity could grow between 4% and 5% in the next three years, worsening a 425.5 million metric ton gap, according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s steel committee.
“With only minor adjustments observed in 2018, global excess capacity continues to be a major challenge for the global steel industry,” the committee said following its March meeting in Paris.
“Many new investments continue to take place around the world and others are in the planning stages, including in regions where excess capacity is most prevalent. Should these projects be realized, global steelmaking capacity could increase by 4 to 5% between 2019 and 2021, in the absence of closures.”
