Stainless Steel Imports Up 53% through April 2010

Total stainless steel imports reached 183,761 tons for YTD April 2010 a 52.8% increase compared to the comparable year-ago period according to the latest report from the Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA).
 
Total specialty steel imports (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) reached 234,102 tons through the same period, a 37.8% increase compared to the comparable year-ago period.
 
Data included in the SSINA report reflect U.S. consumption, imports, and import penetration for YTD April 2010 compared to the same 2009 four-month period for major specialty steel product lines, as well as for total stainless steel and total specialty steel.
 
Stainless steel sheet/strip YTD April imports were 108,722 tons, a 67.5% increase compared to YTD April 2009. U.S. consumption was 429,846 tons through the same period, a 64.2% increase, while four-month import penetration was 25.3%, a 0.5 percentage point increase from 2009.
 
Stainless steel plate YTD April imports were 22,925 tons, an 85.3% increase compared to YTD April 2009. U.S. consumption was 80,788 tons through the same period, a 55.4% increase, while four-month import penetration was 28.4%, a 4.6 percentage point increase from 2009.
 
Stainless steel bar YTD April imports were 29,839 tons, a 2.2% increase compared to YTD April 2009. U.S. consumption was 64,925 tons through the same period, a 16.3% increase, while four-month import penetration was 46.0%, a 6.3 percentage point decrease from 2009.
 
Stainless steel rod YTD April imports were 8,226 tons, a 101.5% increase compared to YTD April 2009. U.S. consumption was 20,118 tons through the same period, a 110.6% increase, while four-month import penetration was 40.9%, a 1.8 percentage point decrease from 2009.
 
Stainless steel wire YTD April imports were 14,048 tons, a 45.3% increase compared to YTD April 2009; U.S. consumption was 17,442 tons through the same period, a 24.7 % increase, while four-month import penetration was 80.5%, an 11.4 percentage point increase from 2009.
 
Through YTD April 2010, imports of total stainless steel(comprising the foregoing product lines) were 183,761 tons, a 52.8% increase compared to the comparable year-ago period. U.S. consumption was 613,120 tons through the same period, a 56.0% increase, while four-month import penetration was 30.0%, a 0.6 percentage point decrease from 2009.
 
Alloy tool steel YTD April imports were 20,015 tons, a 26.8% increase compared to YTD April 2009; U.S. consumption and import penetration were not calculable.
 
Electrical steel YTD April imports were 30,325 tons, a 10.5% decrease compared to YTD April 2009. U.S. consumption was 73,336 tons through the same period, a 24.6% decrease from YTD April 2009, while four month import penetration was 41.4%, a 6.6 percentage point increase from 2009.
 
Through YTD April 2010, imports of total specialty steel(comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) were 234,102 tons, a 37.8% increase compared to the comparable year-ago period. U.S. consumption was 698,555 tons through the same period, a 39.0% increase, while four-month import penetration was 33.5%, a 0.3 percentage point decrease from 2009.
