Stainless Imports up 39% through YTD June 2011

Total stainless imports reached 406,269 tons through YTD June 2011, 39.2% increase compared to YTD June 2010 according to the latest report from the Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA). Total specialty steel imports (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) reached 514,354 tons through the same period, a 38.3% increase compared to YTD June 2010.
 
Data included in the SSINA report reflect U.S. consumption, imports, and import penetration for YTD June 2011 as compared to the same six-month period in 2010.
 
YTD June 2011 stainless steel sheet/strip imports were 210,847 tons, a 20.7% increase compared to YTD June 2010. U.S. consumption was 836,401 tons through the same period, a 32.5% increase, while six-month import penetration was 25.2%, a 2.5 percentage point decrease from 2010.
 
YTD June 2011 stainless steel plate imports were 82,958 tons, a 136.0% increase compared to YTD June 2010. U.S. consumption was 175,428 tons through the same period, a 53.9% increase, while six-month import penetration was 47.3%, a 16.5 percentage point increase from 2010.
 
YTD June 2011 stainless steel bar imports were 73,149 tons, a 49.3% increase compared to YTD June 2010. U.S. consumption was 137,268 tons through the same period, a 34.6% increase, while six-month import penetration was 53.3%, a 5.2 percentage point increase from 2010.
 
YTD June 2011 stainless steel rod imports were 15,509 tons, a 32.8% increase compared to YTD June 2010. U.S. consumption was 41,613 tons through the same period, a 36.5% increase, while six-month import penetration was 37.3%, a 1.0 percentage point decrease from 2010.
 
YTD June 2011 stainless steel wire imports were 23,806 tons, an 11.9% increase compared to YTD June 2010. U.S. consumption was 28,496 tons through the same period, a 1.5% increase, while six-month import penetration was 83.5%, a 7.7 percentage point increase from 2010.
 
Through YTD June 2011, imports of total stainless steel (comprising the foregoing product lines) were 406,269 tons, a 39.2% increase compared to YTD June 2010. U.S. consumption was 1,219,207 tons through the same period, a 34.6% increase, while six-month import penetration was 33.3%, a 1.1 percentage point increase from 2010.
 
YTD June 2011 alloy tool steel imports were 53,055 tons, a 52.4% increase compared to YTD June 2010. U.S. consumption and import penetration were not calculable.
 
YTD June 2011 electrical steel imports were 55,031 tons, a 21.7% increase compared to YTD June 2010. U.S. consumption was 86,932 tons through the same period, a 17.0% decrease from YTD June 2010, while six-month import penetration was 63.3%, a 20.1 percentage point increase from 2010.
 
Through YTD June 2011, imports of total specialty steel (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) were 514,354 tons, a 38.3% increase compared to YTD June 2010. U.S. consumption was 1,335,577 tons through the same period, a 29.4% increase, while six-month import penetration was 38.5%, a 2.5 percentage point increase from 2010.
