Stainless Imports up 39% through YTD July 2011

Total stainless imports reached 488,826 tons through YTD July 2011, a 38.6% increase compared to YTD July 2010 according to the latest report from the Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA). Total specialty steel imports (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) reached 615,409 tons through the same period, a 37.2% increase compared to YTD July 2010.
 
Data included in the SSINA report reflect U.S. consumption, imports, and import penetration for YTD June 2011 as compared to the same seven-month period in 2010.
 
YTD July 2011 stainless steel sheet/strip imports were 250,460 tons, a 19.0% increase compared to YTD July 2010. U.S. consumption through the period was 963,157 tons, a 34.4% increase, while seven-month import penetration was 26.0%, a 3.4 percentage point decrease from 2010.
 
YTD July 2011 stainless steel plate imports were 106,570 tons, a 136.7% increase compared to YTD July 2010. U.S. consumption through the period was 213,247 tons, a 61.0% increase, while seven-month import penetration was 50.0%, a 16.0 percentage point increase from 2010.
 
YTD July 2011 stainless steel bar imports were 85,774 tons, a 46.4% increase compared to YTD July 2010. U.S. consumption through the period was 157,460 tons, a 30.6% increase, while seven-month import penetration was 54.5%, a 5.9 percentage point increase from 2010.
 
YTD July 2011 stainless steel rod imports were 18,245 tons, a 33.5% increase compared to YTD July 2010. U.S. consumption through the period was 47,466 tons, a 32.6% increase, while seven-month import penetration was 38.4%, a 0.2 percentage point increase from 2010.
 
YTD July 2011 stainless steel wire imports were 27,777 tons, an 11.3% increase compared to YTD July 2010. U.S. consumption through the period was 33,300 tons, a 1.4% increase, while seven-month import penetration was 83.4%, a 7.4 percentage point increase from 2010.
 
Through YTD July 2011, imports of total stainless steel (comprising the foregoing product lines) were 488,826 tons, a 38.6% increase compared to YTD July 2010. U.S. consumption through the period was 1,414,630 tons, a 36.3% increase, while seven-month import penetration was 34.6%, a 0.6 percentage point increase from 2010.
 
YTD July 2011 alloy tool steel imports were 62,398 tons, a 44.9% increase compared to YTD July 2010. U.S. consumption and import penetration through the period were not calculable.
 
YTD July 2011 electrical steel imports were 64,186 tons, a 21.8% increase compared to YTD July 2010. U.S. consumption through the period was 115,269 tons, a 0.8% increase from YTD July 2010, while seven-month import penetration was 55.7%, a 9.6 percentage point increase from 2010.
 
Through YTD July 2011, imports of total specialty steel (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) were 615,409 tons, a 37.2% increase compared to YTD July 2010. U.S. consumption through the period was 1,563,591 tons, a 32.6% increase, while seven-month import penetration was 39.4%, a 1.4 percentage point increase from 2010.
