Stainless Imports up 24.9% Through YTD October 2011

Total stainless imports reached 664,583 tons through YTD October 2011, a 24.9% increase compared to YTD October 2010 according to the latest report from the Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA). Total specialty steel imports (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) reached 850,948 tons through the same period, a 25.5% increase compared to YTD October 2010.
 
Data included in the SSINA report reflect U.S. consumption, imports, and import penetration for YTD October 2011 as compared to the same ten-month period in 2010.
 
YTD October 2011 stainless steel sheet/strip: Imports in YTD October 2011 were 344,606 tons, a 10.4% increase compared to YTD October 2010. U.S. consumption was 1,330,659 tons over the same period, a 29.2% increase, while ten-month import penetration was 25.9%, a 4.4 percentage point decrease from 2010.
 
YTD October 2011 stainless steel plate imports were 138,967 tons, a 78.7% increase compared to YTD October 2010. U.S. consumption was 294,540 tons over the same period, a 37.9% increase, while ten-month import penetration was 47.2%, a 10.8 percentage point increase from 2010.
 
YTD October 2011 stainless steel bar imports were 119,300 tons, a 38.3% increase compared to YTD October 2010. U.S. consumption was 218,564 tons over the same period, a 23.4% increase, while ten-month import penetration was 54.6%, a 5.9 percentage point increase from 2010.
 
YTD October 2011 stainless steel rod imports were 22,837 tons, a 17.1% increase compared to YTD October 2010. U.S. consumption was 60,632 tons over the same period, a 12.0% increase, while ten-month import penetration was 37.7%, a 1.7 percentage point increase from 2010.
 
YTD October 2011 stainless steel wire imports were 38,872 tons, a 6.9% increase compared to YTD October 2010. U.S. consumption was 50,979 tons over the same period, a 5.1% decrease, while ten-month import penetration was 76.3%, a 1.4 percentage point increase from 2010.
 
Through YTD October 2011, imports of total stainless steel (comprising the foregoing product lines) were 664,583 tons, a 24.9% increase compared to YTD October 2010. U.S. consumption was 1,955,373 tons over the same period, a 28.3% increase, while ten-month import penetration was 34.0%, a 0.9 percentage point decrease from 2010.
 
YTD October 2011 alloy tool steel imports were 91,146 tons, a 35.2% increase compared to YTD October 2010. U.S. consumption and import penetration were not calculable.
 
YTD October 2011 electrical steel imports were 95,219 tons, a 21.5% increase compared to YTD October 2010. U.S. consumption was 191,533 tons over the same period, a 20.5% increase from YTD October 2010, while ten-month import penetration was 49.7%, a 0.4 percentage point increase from 2010.
 
Through YTD October 2011, imports of total specialty steel (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) were 850,948 tons, a 25.5% increase compared to YTD October 2010. U.S. consumption was 2,195,031 tons over the same period, a 27.4% increase, while ten-month import penetration was 38.8%, a 0.5 percentage point decrease from 2010.
