Stainless Imports up 22% Through YTD November 2011

Total stainless imports reached 728,648 tons through YTD November 2011, a 21.8% increase compared to YTD November 2010 according to the latest report from the Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA). Total specialty steel imports (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) reached 937,322 tons through the same period, a 22.8% increase compared to YTD November 2010.
 
Data included in the SSINA report reflect U.S. consumption, imports, and import penetration for YTD November 2011 as compared to the same 11-month period in 2010.
 
YTD November 2011 stainless steel sheet/strip imports were 369,154 tons, a 5.4% increase compared to YTD November 2010. U.S. consumption was 1,449,889 tons over the same period, a 26.5% increase, while eleven-month import penetration was 25.5%, a 5.0 percentage point decrease from 2010.
 
YTD November 2011 stainless steel plate imports were 160,335 tons, an 81.2% increase compared to YTD November 2010. U.S. consumption was 335,571 tons over the same period, a 38.5% increase, while eleven-month import penetration was 47.8%, an 11.3 percentage point increase from 2010.
 
YTD November 2011 stainless steel bar imports were 130,473 tons, a 34.3% increase compared to YTD November 2010. U.S. consumption was 237,816 tons over the same period, a 20.1% increase, while eleven-month import penetration was 54.9%, a 5.8 percentage point increase from 2010.
 
YTD November 2011 stainless steel rod imports were 25,452 tons, a 17.1% increase compared to YTD November 2010. U.S. consumption was 66,799 tons over the same period, an 11.6% increase, while eleven-month import penetration was 38.1%, a 1.8 percentage point increase from 2010.
 
YTD November 2011 stainless steel wire imports were 43,234 tons, a 6.2% increase compared to YTD November 2010. U.S. consumption was 56,500 tons over the same period, a 5.0% increase, while eleven-month import penetration was 76.5%, a 0.9 percentage point increase from 2010.
 
Through YTD November 2011, imports of total stainless steel (comprising the foregoing product lines) were 728,648 tons, a 21.8% increase compared to YTD November 2010. U.S. consumption was 2,146,576 tons over the same period, a 26.3% increase, while eleven-month import penetration was 33.9%, a 1.3 percentage point decrease from 2010.
 
YTD November 2011 alloy tool steel imports were 101,770 tons, a 32.3% increase compared to YTD November 2010. U.S. consumption and import penetration were not calculable.
 
YTD November 2011 electrical steel imports were 106,904 tons, a 21.6% increase compared to YTD November 2010. U.S. consumption was 212,380 tons over the same period, a 19.9% increase from YTD November 2010, while eleven-month import penetration was 50.3%, a 0.7 percentage point increase from 2010.
 
Through YTD November 2011, imports of total specialty steel (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) were 937,322 tons, a 22.8% increase compared to YTD November 2010. U.S. consumption was 2,413,138 tons over the same period, a 25.4% increase, while eleven-month import penetration was 38.8%, a 0.8 percentage point decrease from 2010.
