SSINA: U.S. Specialty Steel Imports Up 12.3% in January 2013

The Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA) has released statistical data on imports, U.S. consumption, and import penetration for January 2013. The data represents U.S. consumption, imports, and import penetration for January 2013 compared to the same 2012 one month period.
“We believe the significant increases in imports of stainless steel sheet and strip and stainless steel plate in January were attributable, in part, to imports of feedstock for the Calvert, Ala., operations of Outokumpu,” said Skip Hartquist, counsel for SSINA.
The following data is presented by specialty steel product line, total stainless steel, and total specialty steel:
·         Stainless steel sheet/strip: Imports in January 2013 were 44,557 tons, a 57.9% increase compared to January 2012; U.S. consumption was 144,902 tons, a 3.8% increase; one month import penetration was 30.7%, a 10.5 percentage point increase from 2012.
