SSAB Secures Domestic Scrap Source

The scrap is being sourced from Stena Nordic Recycling Center in Halmstad, Sweden. The first deliveries will be timed with the ramp-up of the new furnace. Deliveries will primarily take place by rail.

SSAB said the agreement will allow Sweden to recycle more of its own scrap.

“On our journey toward fossil-free steel production, it is important to establish partnerships in the raw material sector,” said Asma Manesh, SSAB’s scrap commodity manager.

“Our transformation in Oxelösund means that we will reduce Sweden’s CO2 emissions by around 3% by producing steel from both recycled scrap metal and fossil-free sponge iron,” Manesh added.

In parallel with the agreement, Stena Metall representatives said the company is working on a program to recycle material from selected SSAB customers in Sweden.
