SSAB Reaches New Milestone in Green Steel Evolution
06/22/2021 - SSAB’s pilot-scale direct reduction plant has successfully produced about 100 metric tons of hydrogen-reduced sponge iron, a new milestone in its effort to produce fossil-fuel-free steels.
“This technological breakthrough is a critical step on the road to fossil-free steel. The potential cannot be underestimated. It means that we can reach climate goals in Sweden and Finland and contribute to reducing emissions across Europe,” said SSAB president and chief executive Martin Lindqvist.
Importantly, the company said the production was continuous and of good quality. And even more notable, the hydrogen supplying the test plant was produced with fossil-fuel-free electricity, the first time ever that hydrogen produced with fossil-fuel-free electricity has been used to reduce iron, it said.
