SSAB Moves Up Blast Furnace Maintenance Project
02/04/2019 - SSAB Europe is taking down the No. 2 blast furnace at its Raahe plant in Finland for an eight-week maintenance outage, according to an announcement from the steelmaker.
SSAB said the outage follows what it called a minor breakout that occurred 22 January, when some molten iron leaked through the hearth wall.
The company said that after studying the incident, it decided to move up maintenance work that had been set for the summer of 2020 to reduce the risk of further disruptions.
In advancing the maintenance work, the company will now postpone plans to rebuild the furnace, pushing that project back to 2022 or 2023.
