SSAB Contracts Engineering Partner for Mini-Mill Build

"We are proud to continue our strong partnership with SSAB on this important green transformation project aimed at decarbonizing steel production," said Nicholas Oksanen, AFRY executive vice president and head of process industries. "The unique combination of AFRY’s local and global expertise as well as our deep knowledge of SSAB’s projects will ensure a high-quality and efficient project delivery from AFRY."

SSAB is building an electric arc furnace mini-mill to replace its blast furnace production in Luleå. The mill will produce 2.5 million metric tons of fossil-free steel per year and cut Sweden’s overall carbon emissions by 7%.

In addition to the electric arc furnaces, the mill will include secondary metallurgy, thin-slab casting and hot rolling. AFRY will be responsible for basic and detail engineering of the melting and hot rolling complex.
