SSAB Celebrates Start of Work on EAF

“We are now embarking on the large-scale construction and transformation of SSAB’s Nordic production system. Transformation of our Nordic production system will have a positive impact both locally and globally, and help our customers to reduce their carbon footprint," said Martin Lindqvist, SSAB president and chief executive officer.

"At the same time, we will keep local jobs and improve the surrounding environment,” he added.

The 190-ton AC furnace, which is being built by SMS group, will be capable of melting direct reduced iron, hot briquetted iron and scrap.

“With an upper shell diameter of 9.3 m, the new EAF is one of the largest installations in the world for similar applications, and it will help SSAB to scale up the decarbonization of its production processes,” SMS group said.

In addition to the furnace, SMS group will supply a yard management system for plantwide raw material handling.

“The collaboration between both companies represents a pioneering step towards a sustainable and environmentally conscious steel industry. By integrating innovative technologies and using fossil-free materials, the companies are demonstrating their commitment to reducing CO2 emissions and leading the industry towards a greener future,” said Olaf Stalfort, SMS group’s chief sales officer for Europe.
