SSAB Americas Advances HYBRIT Trials
06/17/2024 - SSAB Americas is trialing hydrogen-reduced sponge iron in its Iowa electric arc furnace mill, with the first full heat scheduled to take place on Tuesday, according to SSAB Americas president Chuck Schmitt.
Schmitt, who spoke during the 2024 Global Steel Dynamics Forum, said the heat will be the first consisting entirely of the material, which was produced at SSAB’s HYBRIT pilot plant in Sweden and shipped overseas.
The HYBRIT pilot plant is fueled by hydrogen rather than fossil fuels.
Schmitt said the purpose is to tryout the material in production of its SSAB Zero steel, which is made using scrap, biogas and biocoal.
The Global Steel Dynamics Forum is taking place Monday at Tuesday in New York City. Check back with AIST Steel News for more updates.
