SSAB, Volvo Partner on Developing Vehicles Made From Green Steel
04/08/2021 - SSAB will work with Volvo Group under a newly signed collaboration agreement to develop and build vehicles made from fossil-free steel, the steelmaker said on Thursday.
"We are now taking a giant leap towards an entirely fossil-free value chain all the way to the end customer. Together with Volvo Group, we will start work on the development and serial production of fossil-free steel products,” said SSAB president and chief executive officer Martin Lindqvist.
“We will work together with our customers to reduce their climate impact while strengthening their competitiveness,” he added.
Volvo already is set to begin production on concept vehicles and machines made from SSAB steel produced with hydrogen. Starting next year, Volvo plans to start limited serial production and gradually ramp up to mass production with SSAB’s fossil-free steel.
“We are determined to be a climate-neutral company by 2050 in line with the Paris Agreement. This means that our vehicles and machines will be emission-free when in operation but also that we will review the materials, like steel, used in our products and will gradually switch to fossil-free alternatives here as well. This is an important step on the road to completely climate-neutral transports,” said Volvo president and chief executive Martin Lundstedt.
