Spanish Steelmakers Join €3.23 Billion Hydrogen Consortium
01/24/2022 - Spanish steel companies CELSA Group, Sidenor, AMES Group and Tubacex have signed on to the country’s largest-ever multi-sector investment project devoted to renewable hydrogen technology.
The Spanish Hydrogen Project (SHYNE) consists of 33 entities representing public and private companies, associations, research and development centers, and universities. According to an official press release, the group will establish renewable hydrogen projects across Spain that will add 500 MW of hydrogen capacity by 2025 and 2 GW by 2030. The €3.23 billion project is estimated to generate more than 13,000 jobs.
Long products maker CELSA Group will serve as one of SHYNE’s seven main promoting partners, while Sidenor, AMES Group and Tubacex will participate as collaborators.
“We are already a low-emissions company in our sector, but we are working to achieve zero net carbon emissions in our business,” said CELSA Group chief executive Francesc Rubiralta. “Being part of this project gives us an opportunity to do so and also to contribute to the development of the ecosystem necessary for Spain to become a European leader in the production and consumption of green hydrogen.”
The SHYNE consortium commemorated its launch last week in a ceremony attended by members of the Spanish government. In his ceremony address, Raül Blanco, Spain’s secretary general of industry and small- to medium-sized enterprises, said that “Spain has a unique opportunity and all the capacity to lead the hydrogen industrial value chain in Europe. The SHYNE project is a great example of this. We celebrate the launch of this project and the participation of 22 companies and 11 associations, technology centers, and universities that demonstrate the unique industrial and technological capacity that Spain has.”
