South Korean Steelmaker Upgrades Secondary Metallurgy Plant
10/28/2015 - South Korea’s Hyundai Steel Co. has put a new quick-change Ruhrstahl Heraeus (RH) process plant into service at its secondary metallurgy facilities in Dangjin, the vendor on the project has announced.
According to SMS Mevac, the first melt was treated on 5 October 2015, about one month ahead of schedule. The steel treated in the RH plant is continuously cast into blooms and processed into high-alloyed quality parts, primarily for use in the automotive industry.
SMS Mevac said the plant has a nominal heat weight of 155 tons and an average production capacity of 1.2 million tons per year. It includes a hydraulically actuated ladle lifting system, a burner lance and a vacuum-alloying system for adding ferroalloys under vacuum.
The vacuum-alloying system is driven by a newly modified four-stage steam-ejector pump system outfitted with advanced pressure control technology.
SMS Mevac was responsible for the basic engineering and parts of the detail engineering; delivery of key components such as the burner lance and the hydraulic system; and supervision of installation and commissioning.
