South Korean Steelmaker Completes Blast Furnace Rebuild
06/17/2016 - POSCO has relit the No. 5 blast furnace at its Gwangyang works following a 112-day refurbishment, the company has announced.
As part of the project, the furnace’s volume was expanded from 3,950 cubic meters to 5,500 cubic meters, making it the ninth-largest in the world, POSCO said. The furnace has an ironmaking capacity of 5 million metric tons.
The project also extended the furnace’s lifespan by 15 another years.
With the project completed, the Gwangyang works is now home to three of the world’s largest blast furnaces, according to POSCO. The No. 1 furnace is the world’s largest, with a volume of 6,000 cubic meters, the company said. The No. 4 blast furnace has a volume of 5,500 cubic meters.
All told, the steel works is capable of producing 21 million metric tons of iron annually.
