South Korean EAF Sees Efficiency Gains Through New Tech Package
10/09/2020 - South Korean special steel producer SeAH Besteel recently contracted Danieli to retrofit an electric arc furnace with a technology package aimed at improving process efficiency.
In a statement, Danieli said it installed its Q-MELT package on the No. 3 EAF at the steelmaker’s Gunsan meltshop. The package consists of Danieli’s Q-REG electrode control regulator; its LINDARC laser-based, real-time offgas analysis system; and its MELTMODEL for dynamic adaptation of oxygen flow rate setpoints.
“The steel quality targets indicated for this 100-ton electric furnace require the use of low-residual scrap, which results in very dense charge mixes. The need to avoid over-oxidation—thus to maximize process repeatability and steel quality—together with the target of maximizing arc stability and active power in the presence of high-density scrap, were the major reasons for selecting the Q-MELT technological package,” Danieli said.
With the addition of the system, electrical energy consumption decreased 2% and the standard deviation of oxygen content in the steel before tapping declined 15%, Danieli said.
