SMS Wins Order for Chinese Strip Mill

According to SMS, the greenfield plant is scheduled to be put into service in 2017. It will produce tubular grades and cold strip for the construction and household appliances industries. But its focus will be on producing advanced steel grades for the automotive industry.

The plant will consist of a hot wide strip mill, a pickling tandem mill, a hot-dip galvanizing line and two annealing lines, SMS said.

The hot wide strip mill will be capable of producing 4.8 million tons annually in widths up to 1,900 mm. The slab sizing press will allow for width reductions of up to 350 mm. The mill will have two high-performance roughing stands outfitted with hydraulic adjustment systems, SMS’ Continuous Variable Crown system, and its Profile Contour and Flatness Control system.

Much of the plant’s hot strip will be processed in the pickling tandem mill, which will have an annual capacity of two million tons. The mill will employ a turbulence tank pickling system and a five-stand tandem mill outfitted with SMS’ new combined Continuous Variable Crown plus/Enhanced Shifting System technology for flexible optimization of the roll gap.

The two annealing lines and the hot-dip galvanizing will make use of high-performance Drever radiant tube furnaces, which will be equipped with ultra-fast cooling systems to ensure high cooling rates. One of the annealing lines will have an annual production capacity of 950,000 tons; the other will have a capacity of 650,000 tons. The hot-dip galvanizing line will have a production capacity of 400,000 tons, SMS said.

The facility’s surface-finished cold strip will come in widths of between 900 mm and 1,850 mm and in final gauges of between 0.3 mm and 2.5 mm.

With the new equipment, the state-owned company will be able to produce almost five million tons of hot strip and two million tons of surface-finished cold strip per year, SMS said.
