SMS Wins Meltshop Order for Nucor’s Greenfield West Virginia Mill

SMS said the scope of supply includes two direct current electric arc furnaces, each with a capacity of 190 metric tons, two twin-ladle furnaces for precise control of liquid steel temperature and composition, and two vacuum tank car degassers. Nucor West Virginia will also receive a complete suite of meltshop safety, electrical and automation technologies.

SMS said the meltshop has been designed to allow Nucor to enhance its product offerings for the automotive steel market. “(Our) vast experience in supplying liquid steel intended for such grades was a determining factor in the selection of SMS group (for the project),” the supplier said in an official press release.

Hot commissioning for the meltshop project is scheduled for the second half of 2024.
