SMS to Modernize EKO Stahl Slab Caster

Feb. 20, 2004 — EKO Stahl GmbH, a German company of the Arcelor Group, has awarded SMS Demag AG, Germany, a contract for the modernization of its twin-strand slab caster.

The modernization is being undertaken to boost production by improving service life of the three casting bows. To accomplish this, existing rollers in the lower area of the casting bows (rollers 20 to 40) will be replaced by rollers with circumferential cooling. The new rollers feature a high thermal dissipation rate resulting in a longer service life. Rollers with circumferential cooling and a diameter of 230 mm have been successfully used in special steel casters since 1991.

The design upgrade of the secondary cooling system will also help to improve product quality.

Commissioning of the first casting bow is scheduled for September 2004, while the two remaining units will be put in operation six months later each. Work operations will be completed in September 2005.

SMS Demag AG forms part of the Metallurgical Plant and Rolling Mill Technology Business Area of the SMS Group.
