SMS Siemag to Supply Jindal Steel and Power with X-Melt Plant

Jindal Steel and Power Ltd. in Angul, Orissa, India, has placed an order with SMS Siemag, Germany, for an X-Melt® electric steelmaking plant including auxiliary equipment. The steelworks will process up to 100% direct reduced iron (DRI) and have an annual production of around 1.5 million tonnes of liquid steel.

SMS Siemag will supply a 250-tonne ARCCESS® electric arc furnace with a 200-MVA transformer, the material handling system, a 250-tonne ladle furnace, and a gas cleaning system to fulfill environmental restrictions. Optimized for highly efficient use of electrical energy, the EAF will be capable of hot DRI charging and will be equipped with oxygen injection and oxygen lance technology.

The complete X-Pact® electrical and automation equipment, including the technological process models (Level 2), is also part of the order. The automation system will be subjected to a “Plug & Work” test prior to commissioning, which is scheduled for the beginning of 2011.

Plug & Work tests under “almost realistic conditions,” with the simulation reproducing the entire mechanical equipment and drive systems of the plant and the product to be manufactured.

As part of the same project, SMS Mevac UK Ltd., England, has also received an order for the supply of a 250-tonne twin vacuum degasser (RH). The degasser will enable the facility to produce a range of products, from structural to high-grade steels.

This investment will enable Jindal Steel and Power to start steel production at Angul. Since 2005, the company has operated two 100-tonne electric arc furnaces from SMS Siemag at Raighar steelworks.
