SMS Siemag to Supply Cold Rolling Complex to Gazi Metal

08/15/2011 - Gazi Metal Mamülleri, Turkey, has placed an order with SMS Siemag, Germany, for the supply of a new production facility for cold strip with an initial capacity of 350,000 tonnes/year.

Located near the town of Karasu in Turkey, the new cold rolling complex will be capable of rolling carbon steel and silicon steel strip at an initial capacity of 350,000 tonnes/year. With the finished strip, Gazi Metal will also supply the automotive industry and manufacturers of household equipment.
 
The first construction stage will comprise the erection of a semi-continuous pickling line with an attached acid regeneration plant, a CVC® plus six-high reversing cold mill, and a four-high skinpass mill. In addition to all mechanical components for the mills, SMS Siemag's supply scope also includes the drive engineering and automation.
 
In the second construction stage, annual production will be subsequently increased to 700,000 tonnes and the mills will enabled to produce tinplate. Preconditions for this expansion will be incorporated into the mill’s design during the first construction stage,
 
The semi-continuous pickling line will be designed for continuous operation at speeds of at least 30 meters/minute. The entry and exit sections of the line will be capable of attaining speeds of 120 meters/minute, while the process section will be capable of a maximum speed of 100 meters/minute. Strips of widths ranging from 600 to 1,550 mm and gages of 1.5 to 6.0 mm are processed here. In the second stage of construction, the pickling line will be converted to a fully-continuous pickling line.
 
To support the pickling line, SMS Siemag Process Technologies GmbH, Austria, will supply a fluidized-bed acid regeneration plant capable of treating 1,700 l/hour of hydrochloric acid, equal to the pickling line’s entire volume of acid throughput. In the second construction phase, the capacity of the acid regeneration plant will be increased to 3,400 l/hour.
 
The single-stand six-high reversing cold mill will be designed for rolling a wide range of products. Carbon steel strip with widths up to 1,500 mm will be rolled to final gages of up to 0.25 mm, while non-grain-oriented silicon steel strip will be rolled to final gages of up to 0.27 mm. The maximum rolling speed is 1,200 meters/minute.
 
To achieve the strip properties necessary for further processing, all cold-rolled strip will be rolled in the single-stand skin-pass mill at a maximum rolling speed of 1,000 meters/minute. The four-high skinpass mill will process strips with widths ranging from 600 to 1,500 mm and gages from 0.25 to 3.0 mm. In the second construction stage, a second stand will be added enabling the skinpass mill to process strips with gages down to 0.16 mm and in Double Cold Reduction (DCR) mode down to 0.12 mm.
 
The new cold strip rolling facility is scheduled to be started up in 2013.
