SMS Siemag to Modernize Continuous Caster for Salzgitter Flachstahl
04/02/2012 - Salzgitter Flachstahl has awarded SMS Siemag a contract for the supply of a new ladle turret for Continuous Caster No. 2 at its Salzgitter location.
Salzgitter Flachstahl, Germany, has awarded SMS Siemag a contract for the supply of a new ladle turret for Continuous Caster No. 2 at its Salzgitter location. SMS Siemag’s scope of supply comprises all mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical components, the required adaptation of the foundations, as well as complete erection and installation.
The two-strand caster No. 2 is located between casters No. 1 and No. 3. Because the space available for dismantling and erection is confined, SMS Siemag says it has developed a special erection concept that minimizes the shutdown period of Continuous Caster No. 2 while continuing production on the other continuous casters, except for a shutdown period of 10 hours. The replacement of the turret is scheduled for summer 2013.
Salzgitter Flachstahl operates four continuous casting lines at this location, and all of them were supplied by SMS Siemag. Continuous Caster No. 2 went into operation in 1973.
