SMS Siemag Modernizes Converter at ArcelorMittal

ArcelorMittal Asturias, Spain, successfully took a new converter into operation in late 2011 at the Gijon works. The meltshop, which produces heavy plates and rail grades, is equipped with two 120-tonnne converters.

ArcelorMittal Asturias based its decision to invest in a second converter on the positive experience with its first converter. The new vessel, which incorporates SMS Siemag's lamella suspension system, also features an approximately 25% higher specific volume. The higher specific volume translates to a higher yield since the slopping rate is reduced and converter’s availability increases.

The order scope for SMS Siemag included basic and detail engineering as well as supply of the converter vessel, slag skirt, trunnion ring, lamella suspension system and converter tilting drive.

ArcelorMittal Asturias is part of the ArcelorMittal group's Long Carbon Europe (LCE) division.
