SMS Opens New U.S. Service Center, Dedicated Roll Shops
10/06/2016 - SMS Technical Services has opened a new repair and maintenance shop in Arkansas to serve the Big River Steel facility and other regional steelmakers, the company has announced.
The new shop is less than two miles from Big River Steel’s plant and will provide a variety of services, including those related to high-speed caster maintenance.
Among other things, the shop will be equipped with a high-capacity CNC horizontal milling center; shotblasting and paint-spraying booths; and state-of-the-art electroplating facilities so that it can recondition copper molds.
"The new workshop in Osceola offers operators of high-speed continuous casters in North America a full line of services, including repairs, overhauls, maintenance, as well as reconditioning of casting molds," the company said in a statement.
"SMS group has been consistently pursuing the concept of establishing local service branches all over the world. This helps steel mill operators needing to have components of their plants serviced or repaired save on shipping costs," it added.
Aside from the center, SMS said it will build, equip and man two on-site roll shops at Big River Steel’s plant.
"Contracts like this are becoming increasingly popular among steelmakers in North America," the company said.
It expects to employ about 50 people at the service center and roll shops.
