SMS Meer to Upgrade Rohrwerk Maxhütte Stretch-Reducing Mill

Rohrwerk Maxhütte GmbH, Sulzbach-Rosenberg, Germany, has placed an order with SMS Meer to repair and modernize its existing stretch-reducing mill.

The facility’s existing stretch-reducing mill forms part of a push-bench plant. It consists of 28 stand positions that are driven via a mechanical superimposition gearbox. The stretch-reducing mill serves to produce pipes in the small diameter range from 21.3 to 139.7 mm with wall thicknesses up to 13.0 mm.

SMS Meer will upgrade the stretch-reducing mill’s drive system and CARTA® automation—both originally installed by SMS Meer in 1989. The drive system will be designed for the production of square and rectangular hollow sections.

SMS Meer will also upgrade the rotary saw situated downline of the stretch-reducing mill to accommodate a pipe pass speed of 8.5 meters/second. The saw will be equipped with an innovative pipe support system so that the thickened ends inherent in the stretch-reducing process can be discharged directly behind the rotary saw.

SMS Meer’s scope of supply includes additional roll stands for the stretch-reducing mill; design data for the drive system; new equipment for modernization of the existing rotary saw; and upgrading the CARTA system. SMS Meer will also provide supervision of erection and commissioning.

The repair and modernization measures are scheduled for the beginning of 2008.
