SMS Meer to Supply PQF Seamless Tube Mill for Vallourec & Sumitomo do Brasil

Vallourec & Sumitomo Tubos do Brasil has awarded a contract to SMS Meer to supply a new Premium Quality Finishing (PQF®) seamless tube plant.

The new state-of-the-art tube PQF mill will be equipped with individual roll drive and an all-hydraulic roll adjustment system. To ensure the constant premium quality, the whole plant will be monitored and controlled by the CARTA® technology system and the LASUS® wall-thickness measuring system. SMS Meer developed both systems.

SMS Meer will supply all the key components for the PQF facility’s equipment, including media systems and technological automation. SMS Meer’s scope of supply also includes project management, supervision of erection and commissioning, and training of the operating personnel.

The new PQF plant forms part of a new state-of-the-art integrated steel works and pipe mill that will strengthen the competitiveness of Vallourec and Sumitomo Metals in an expanding market. The new facility, to be built in the state of Minas Gerais, will have an annual capacity of 600,000 tonnes. It will be primarily dedicated to the production of seamless Oil Country Tubular Goods (OCTG) products, with diameters up to 16 inches.

SMS Meer has built plants in the past for both Vallourec and Sumitomo. The new plant is scheduled to start production in 2010.
