SMS Meer to Supply Heavy-Section Mill to Inner Mongolia Baotou Steel

Inner Mongolia Baotou Steel Union Co. Ltd., China, has placed an order with SMS Meer, Germany, for the supply of a heavy section mill.

The new mill, which has an annual capacity of 1.2 million tonnes, will enable Baotou to produce beams with web heights from 200 to 1,000 mm, rails from 52 to 75 kg/m and U-shaped sheet piles up to 600 mm. The mill will feature modern compact cartridge stand (CCS®) roll stands and a nine-roller Compact Roller Straightener (CRS®) that will enable quick section changes in as little as 20 minutes, providing Baotou’s operation with additional flexibility and profitability.

The heavy-section mill’s universal CCS roll stands feature hydraulic roll adjustment control and rigid stand construction that will allow final dimensions to be rolled with close tolerances. Straightening equipment comprises a nine-roller CRS straightener with hydraulically adjustable rollers supported in bearings on both sides for the straightening of beams and rails. For rail production, the mill will also include an additional vertical straightener equipped with individually driven straightening shafts.

Rolled stock will be cut into finished lengths on cold saws from SMS Meer that the company says will provide low cutting costs, a high throughput and high availability.

The heavy-section mill operates to the XH® universal rolling principle that enables rolling on a compact tandem group, in which all stands are in operation at each pass. According to SMS Meer, the XH rolling process will enable Baotou to produce beams more cost effectively, as the process guarantees a higher productivity and lower roll wear.

In addition to the core technological equipment, SMS Meer’s scope of supplies and services also includes planning and engineering, training, and supervision of erection and commissioning.

Commissioning of the mill is scheduled for the end of 2012.
