SMS Meer to Provide Three-Roll Piercer for Mannesmannrohr Sachsen
09/24/2007 - SMS Meer will convert V&M Deutschland’s push-bench plant at the Zeithain Works into a cross-roll piercing and elongating plant with the installation of a three-roll piercer.
V&M Deutschland GmbH, Zeithain Works, Germany, has placed an order with SMS Meer for the conversion of its push-bench plant into a CPE (Cross-roll Piercing and Elongating) plant with the installation of a three-roll piercer.
The plant will be used to produce seamless tubes in the diameter range from 17.2 to 114.3 mm with a planned capacity of 170,000 tonnes per year. Steel grades such as ball bearing steels, free cutting steels and high-alloy steels will be rolled on the plant.
SMS Meer will supply the new mill equipment, including the electrical and media systems and the technology for conversion of the plant. SMS Meer’s scope of supplies and services also includes erection and commissioning, as well as training of the operating personnel.
This will be the first example of a three-roll cross-rolling mill being used as a piercer in conjunction with a push-bench. Conversion of the push-bench plant into a CPE plant will significantly reduce the production costs and the process-related material losses.
Commissioning is scheduled for January 2008.
The Zeithain Works became part of the Salzgitter Group on July 2, 2007, as an independent company under the new name of Mannesmannrohr Sachsen GmbH.
