SMS Meer Supplies Largest Screw Press to Wuxi Turbine Blade

SMS Meer, Germany, is supplying the most powerful clutch-operated screw press — with a press force of 35,000 tonnes — to Wuxi Turbine Blade C. Ltd. of China. The topping-out ceremony was celebrated after only 48 days of construction.

The new press from SMS Meer’s Eumuco Hasenclever Product Unit will help Wuxi Turbine Blade to expand its capacities by enabling high forming forces with short times of contact with the forging. The plant requires only 500 kW of frequency-controlled drive power, which amounts to some 87% less energy than for traditional screw presses.

The plant’s core feature is the 1,320 mm diameter, 85-tonne screw. The new plant also features variable impact speed, which will enable Wuxi Turbine Blade to forge larger parts than it was previously capable of forging. The capacity to forge larger parts will help the company to meet the growing demands of its customers in the aeronautical and power generation industries.

SMS Meer has been working with Wuxi Turbine Blade for more than 30 years. The first major press from SMS Meer, at that time SMS Eumuco Hasenclever, was put into operation in Wuxi in 1995. While the new machine is being set up, the units of this plant will be modernized.

Commissioning of the new press is scheduled for May 2011.

Wuxi Turbine Blade C. Ltd., which is part of the Shanghai Electric Group, is located in Wuxi in the Chinese province of Jiangsu.
