SMS Meer Commissions Three-Roll Precision Block for Timken Bar Mill
06/23/2009 - Timken and SMS Meer jointly commission Timken’s Harrison Steel Plant bar mill, which was recently expanded with a new three-roll precision sizing mill and bar finishing end.
The Timken Co. and SMS Meer have jointly commissioned Timken’s recently expanded bar mill at Harrison Steel Mill in Canton, Ohio.
SMS Meer’s scope of supply for the bar mill upgrade comprised the supply of a three-roll Precision Sizing Mill (PSM®) and a bar finishing end with cooling bed, cut-off unit and loading facilities. Installed downstream of the existing rolling mill, the new PSM facilitates the use of a standardized pass in the roughing and intermediate mill (one-family rolling). It also enables the production of an infinitely variable range of finished sizes by means of roll adjustment (free-size rolling).
The precision sizing mill comprises five roll cassettes each with three rolls. It features hydraulic roll positioning (which permits adjustment under load), Automatic Gage Control, and a laser measuring device downline of the PSM for product size measurement. Process parameters can be set with the installed CARTA® process model. SMS Meer supplied the complete electrical equipment, and the automation system was jointly developed by SMS Meer and Timken.
This bar mill expansion will enable Timken to extend its product size range, increase its mill capacity and improve the quality of its 25 to 127 mm (round) SBQ bars. The company was achieving tolerances of ½ ASTM and better shortly after commissioning.
