According to SMS group, the project entails improvements to the mill’s laminar cooling section and downcoiler, enabling it to produce wear-resistant grades. 

“Steel sheets and plates such as these are usually delivered in a quenched state. At Colakoğlu, this will be achieved by increasing the cooling rates in the laminar cooling section of the HSM. The increased cooling rate is also beneficial for other steel grades in the product mix. The use of various alloying elements can be reduced, saving significantly on operating costs,” SMS group said. 

In addition to the equipment, SMS group will supply its X-Pact Microstructure Property Model, which offers specialized functions for monitoring and simulating mechanical properties.

To minimize production disruptions and to reduce downtime, the new equipment will be largely preassembled before delivery, SMS group said. The upgrades are to be completed by the fall of 2026.
