In a statement, H2 Green Steel said the selection of SMS group is additional to the award of a direct-reduction plant to consortium partners Paul Wurth, a unit of SMS group, and direct reduction specialist MIDREX. 

“We have jointly designed the plant to make a significant CO₂ reduction throughout the whole steel plant in a way that will set us apart from others in the market. We have chosen SMS group for this project because we believe in their capabilities which have been demonstrated in numerous industrial projects around the world,” said Maria Persson Gulda, H2 Green Steel’s chief technical officer. 

SMS group said it will provide an electric-arc-furnace-based melt shop, a CSP Nexus casting and hot rolling plant, and an advanced cold rolling and processing complex. All told, the mill and direct reduction plant equates to more than EUR1 billion in new business for SMS group, it said. 

“We are very proud to supply the technology for the world's first large-scale all-green steel plant,” said SMS group chief executive Burkhard Dahmen.
