SMS Demag to Upgrade Dillinger Hütte Plate Mill

Dillinger Hütte AG has awarded a contract to SMS Demag to modernize and upgrade the shear line of its heavy plate mill in Dillingen/Saar, Germany.

SMS Demag's scope of supply includes a new dividing shear, in addition to modernizing and upgrading the existing crop shear. Dillinger Hütte’s aim for the revamp is to adapt the shear line to meet more exacting requirements.

The new dividing shear will cut plates up to a thickness of 50 mm at a maximum tensile strength of 1200 N/mm². The closed-housing dividing shear has a high-rigidity structure that allows it to cut higher-strength plates accurately, ensuring straight edges. In addition to the dividing shear itself, SMS Demag will also supply a new knife-changing system, scrap conveying facilities, the traversable stop, a shear depressing table, and all related utility systems.

SMS Demag will also replace all the main components of the crop shear, such as the crankshafts, bottom knife table, top knife slide, and the knife cartridges, thus optimizing the kinematics of the shear. The knife cartridges of the crop shear and of the dividing shear share an identical design and are thus interchangeable.

Following a three-week shutdown period for the revamp, the new systems will be put into operation in October 2008.

SMS group operated under the holding SMS GmbH, a group of companies internationally active in plant construction and mechanical engineering for the steel and nonferrous metals industry. It essentially consists of the two Business Areas SMS Demag and SMS Meer, which jointly form SMS metallurgy. In 2006, some 9,000 employees worldwide generated a turnover of about EUR 2.8 billion.
