SMS Demag to Upgrade ArcelorMittal’s Gent Converters for Gas Recovery
09/03/2007 - SMS Demag will upgrade the dust collection system for ArcelorMittal’s two 290-tonne converters at Gent, preparing it to be retrofitted with a converter gas recovery system.
ArcelorMittal Gent NV, Belgium, has awarded a contract to SMS Demag, Germany, to supply a converter-gas recovery system for its two 280-tonne converters. The system enables the recovery of up to 150,000 Nm3 of dry converter gas per hour.
The converter-gas recovery process is assisted by a special gas switch-over station from which the cleaned gas is conducted into a gas older during the high-energy operational phase.
This gas is fed to a power station and to other consumer points in the works, where the energy contained in the gas is used thermally.
This leads to substantial reductions in CO2 emissions and high cost savings for ArcelorMittal Gent, as the facility uses converter gas instead of other purchased fuels.

SMS Demag’s scope of supply includes planning of the integrated plant and the supply of all core components, including the switch-over stations and pressure-boosting stations for conveying the gas to other points within the works where they can be further utilized.
SMS Demag will also supply the basic engineering for the electrical equipment and the X-Pact® electricaland automation system.
