SMS Demag to Supply X-Roll Heavy Plate Rolling Mill for Posco

Posco, South Korea, has awarded SMS Demag AG a contract to supply a 5.5-meter X-Roll® heavy-plate rolling mill. The new mill will be set up in Posco’s Gwangyang facility on the Korean south coast, where it will be rated for the production of plates that are 6 to 200 mm thick and between 900 and 5400 mm wide.

The roughing and finishing stands, which will each have a rolling force of 120 MN, will rank among the world's most powerful mill stands. The roughing stand will include a flanged-on vertical edger, and SMS Demag will also supply a high-pressure descaler.

SMS Demag will also supply a plate cooling system with pre-leveler and hot plate leveler, as well as a shear line and cold plate leveler. Plate cooling will feature a spray cooling system configured according to SMS Demag’s concept, which employs pinch rolls and a pre-leveler in the entry area.

The shear line will consist of a crop shear, double side trimmer, slitting and cross-cut shears. All shears operate to the rolling-cut principle, and will be capable of cutting high-strength plates that are up to 50 mm thick. A new hot-plate leveler and cold-plate leveler in 9/5 design with an extended leveling range will ensure superior plate flatness.

The annual production in the first stage of construction will amount to 2.0 million tonnes of finished plates. Posco intends to use the new facility, which is to will start operations in mid-2010, to serve the growing market for high-strength plates.

With its annual production of more than 3.5 million tonnes, Posco is one of the world's leading producers of heavy plates.
