SMS Demag to Supply X-Melt EAF, Slab/Beam Blank Caster for Peiner Träger

Peiner Träger GmbH, Germany, a company of the Salzgitter Group, has awarded a contract to SMS Demag to supply an X-Melt electric arc furnace meltshop and revamp a continuous beam-blank caster to an X-Cast combined slab/beam-blank caster. In addition to meeting ever-stricter steel quality requirements, the new facilities will almost double the current annual production of around 1 million tonnes of steel.

SMS Demag's supply includes a 125-tonne ArcCess® electric arc furnace with additives supply system plus two 125-tonne ladle furnaces. Concast AG, Switzerland, also of the SMS group, will supply a 125-tonne twin-tank vacuum degassing station. The secondary metallurgy facilities will enable Peiner Träger to produce advanced steel grades. The electric arc furnace will also produce a wide range of products, from high-quality steels to structural steels.

ArcCess series electric arc furnaces are optimized for the highly efficient use of electric power and include future-oriented burner and oxygen injector technologies. The furnace process is controlled by the FEOS® metallurgical process model (Furnace Energy Optimization System), which helps to ensure high productivity at low production cost.

SMS Demag’s supply scope also includes the revamp of the existing twin-strand beam-blank caster to form a combined unit for casting steel slabs and, alternately, beam blanks. The revamp concept has been developed around short change times and high production speeds. The twin-strand combined continuous caster X-Cast is rated for producing 250-mm thick slabs ranging in width between 800 and 1100 mm as well as for beam blanks with dimensions of 1150 x 490 x 130 mm. The upgrade will transform Peiner Träger’s Continuous Caster No. 2 into Germany's first combined caster for the production of beam blanks and slabs.

SMS Demag will supply the complete X-Pact® electrical equipment and automation system including process models (level 2). Commissioning of the new equipment is scheduled for early 2010.

Peiner Träger will use the increased steelmaking capacity to replace purchased quantities and supply slabs to the company's sister company Hoesch Spundwand in Dortmund. When the second furnace is commissioned, Peiner Träger will become independent of the supply of material from external sources. The company does not plan to increase its production of beams.

Peine, home of the world-famous Peine beams, produces a variety of other sectional steel types such as the European beam, piling sections, and special sections. As part of its ambitious investment program, Peiner Träger GmbH had already in November 2007 ordered a new reversing tandem mill from SMS Meer, which will start operating in the summer of 2009.

An SMS Demag-supplied electric steelmaking plant has been in operation in Peine since 1996. The meltshop comprises a direct-current electric arc furnace with downstream ladle furnace.

X-Melt and X-Cast are trade names of SMS Demag's Steelmaking Plants/Continuous Casting Technology Division.
