SMS Demag to Supply X-Melt Converter Shop for SAIL’s IISCO Facility

IISCO Steel Plant (ISP), India, has placed an order with SMS Demag for an X-Melt® converter shop for the production of quality steel grades. The new shop will be constructed at the Burnpur location in the Indian federal state of West Bengal.

The new steelworks will be rated for an annual production of 2.6 million tonnes of liquid steel. It will comprise three converters, each with a tapping weight of 150 tonnes, as well as three stirring stations, two ladle furnaces, an RH-TOP vacuum recirculation degassing plant. The facility will also include primary and secondary gas cleaning systems and a converter off-gas recovery system.

The BOF converters will be equipped with SMS Demag’s own maintenance-free lamella suspension system. They will feature bottom-stirring systems for combined blowing and tilt drive systems manufactured in SMS Demag’s own workshop in Hilchenbach, Germany. SMS Demag wil also supply the oxygen blowing lance system, the additives supply and ladle rebricking areas, and the rail-bound ladle-transfer vehicles.

For primary gas collection, SMS Demag’s adjustable skirts will help to recover the highest possible proportion of energy-containing CO gas. SMS Demag will also supply the waste-gas cooling system, the wet cleaners, gas change-over and export stations, and a gas holder with a volumetric capacity of 50,000 Nm³ of converter off-gas. With the aid of this technique, a volume of 200 million Nm³ of converter off-gas per year can be used to replace other fossil fuels for energy production. Not only will the technology drive down energy costs, but it will also help to considerably reduce the output of CO2.

Secondary gas cleaning will be provided by easy-to-maintain ElectroStatic Precipitators (ESP) that are rated for a capacity of over 1,870,000 Nm³ per hour.

The X-Pact electrical and automation system will be adapted to all of the mechanical components. In addition to the technical control systems (Level 1), it also includes the metallurgical process models (Level 2) for ensuring economical production and a high level of steel quality.

SMS Demag’s order comprises basic and detail engineering for all of the mechanical core components and the complete X-Pact® electrical equipment and automation package, as well as supervision of the supply, erection, and commissioning, and training of the operating personnel.

Commissioning of the complete steelworks is scheduled for the end of 2010.

The state-managed Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) supplies around 30% of total Indian crude steel production. Here, the range of quality grades extends as far as high-grade and special steels, which cover the dramatically increasing domestic demand and are also exported on the international market. The most important locations are the steelworks at Bhilai, Rourkela, Bokaro, Durgapur, and IISCO.

IISCO—the Indian Iron & Steel Co.— is the oldest steelworks in the SAIL Group and is also the one with the longest tradition. The new X-Melt shop there will replace an existing open-hearth steel plant over the medium term.
