SMS Demag to Supply X-Cast Slab Caster for Rourkela Steel
12/16/2008 - SMS Demag will supply an X-Cast slab caster for Rourkela Steel Plant’s Rourkela facility, located in the state of Orissa.
Rourkela Steel Plant, a company of the SAIL (Steel Authority of India Limited) group, has awarded SMS Demag a contract for the supply of an X-Cast® slab caster for its Rourkela facility, located in the state of Orissa.
The single-strand caster, designed as a vertical bending plant, is intended for slabs in the gages 220, 250 and 300 mm. The caster’s range of widths, from 1300 to 2500 mm, means that it will be producing India’s widest slabs.
SMS Demag's order scope comprises basic and detail engineering, supply of all mechanical components, and the complete X-Pact electrical and automation systems, including control systems and process models.
Caster equipment includes several Intelligent Slab Casting modules that manage quality and production. Modules include the hydraulically driven resonance oscillation system, remotely adjustable mold narrow faces for width changes during casting, and position-controlled CYBERLINK segments that facilitate dynamic soft reduction. The modules, combined with width-dependent air-mist secondary cooling and the Dynamic Solidification Calculation process model, enable the production of slabs with a high internal quality
Rourkela Steel Plant plans to cast sophisticated microalloyed steels and heavy-plate grades on its new caster. The expansion of Steelworks No. 2 will allow Rourkela to increase its annual slab production by 1.5 million tonnes, thus helping it continue to strengthen its market position.
Rourkela Steel Plant already operates two single-strand slab casters from SMS Demag. Commissioning of the new caster is scheduled for 2011.
