SMS Demag to Supply Two 20-Roll Cold Mills for Benxi

Benxi Iron & Steel (Group) Co., Ltd., China, has awarded an order to SMS Demag, a company of the SMS group, Germany, to supply two new 20-roll cold mills.

Benxi, a newcomer to the production of high-grade special-steel strips, selected SMS Demag’s X-roll 20-roll design for its rolling mills. SMS Demag’s supply scope comprises the design and manufacture of the mechanical equipment and supervision of erection and commissioning.

Both Monoblock stands in the MB 22B-54” series will roll strips of up to 1350 mm width. They will process incoming gages of up to 6 mm, which can then be rolled down to final gages of as little as 0.2 mm. The total drive power of 12,500 kW facilitates rolling speeds of up to 800 meters/minute.

The company will use its new 20-high cold mills (Cold Mill No. 1 and No. 2) to further roll hot-rolled (annealed and pickled) special-steel strips from the 300 and 400 series. The products require close thickness and flatness as well as top-class surface quality.

The two cold mills will enable Benxi Iron & Steel to attain an annual production of 200,000 tonnes of high-grade special-steel strip.
