SMS Demag to Supply Melting and Casting Plant for Maghreb Steel
04/23/2008 - SMS Demag will install an electric X-Melt steel plant and a single-strand X-Cast continuous slab caster to feed the twin-strand Steckel mill it is constructing for Maghreb Steel, Morocco.
Maghreb Steel, Morocco, has awarded SMS Demag an order to construct an electric X-Melt steel plant and a single-strand X-Cast continuous slab caster.
Designed for an annual production of 1.0 million tonnes of steel, the new facilities will supply the plant’s Steckel rolling mill with input stock. The product mix will comprise low- and medium-carbon steels and high-strength, low-alloy steels. SMS Demag is also supplying the twin-stand Steckel mill, having received the order in 2007.
SMS Demag’s scope of supply consists of a 120-tonne electric arc furnace with modern Arccess® technology, 120-tonne ladle furnace, dust-collecting facility, and the materials management system for alloying agents. SMS Demag also will supply a single-strand slab caster for the production of 200 mm thick slabs in widths from 900 to 2150 mm.
SMS Demag will supply the detail engineering, mechanical equipment and hydraulic system, as well as the complete X-Pact® electrical equipment and automation package, including process models.
Prior to this project, Maghreb Steel was required to import hot strip to produce the hot-dip galvanized sheet and plate products the company exports from the region. This new investment will enable Maghreb Steel to cover the entire range, from liquid steel to the final product. The production expansion will also allow the company to produce higher value-added goods.
Commissioning of the new X-Melt and X-Cast facilities is scheduled for the beginning of 2011.
Headquartered in Casablanca, Maghreb Steel is one of the largest companies in the North African region for the manufacture of cold-rolled products and has its head office in.
