SMS Demag to Supply Arccess EAF for OMZ

OMZ (Uralmash-Izhora Group), Russia, has awarded an order to SMS Demag for the supply of a 120-tonne electric arc furnace to be installed at the Kolpino, St. Petersburg, location.

OMZ’s new Arccess® EAF will allow the company to produce a wide range of products, from structural steels to
high-grade steels as well as high-quality rotor and reactor steel grades for nuclear power plants and the chemical industry. The Arccess concept is designed for optimized use of both electric energy and burner/oxygen injection technology; together, the two energy sources yield high productivity at lower production costs.

SMS Demag’s scope of supply comprises a 120-tonne Arccess electric arc furnace with dust collecting facility and additives supply system. The EAF will have an annual capacity of 600,000 tonnes.

The arc furnace will be erected in the existing bays of OMZ’s Special Steels works. OMZ Special Steels, a 100% owned subsidiary of the OMZ Group, was established in 2002 on the premises of the Izhorskye Zavody metallurgical works.

Commissioning of the new EAF is scheduled for the end of 2008.
